Godwin was born on February 27, 1996, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He went to Middletown High School where he played high school football for the Cavaliers. Godwin had an impressive high school record recording more than 700 yards every year of his school career and as a senior, he had 1,150 yards and 16 receiving touchdowns.

He was considered as a four-star recruit by Rivals and Godwin decided to play college football at Penn State.

Godwin decided to enter the NFL Draft foregoing his final year at Penn State.

3. He was selected by Buccaneers in the 2017 NFL Draft

Chris Godwin was selected by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the third round of the 2017 NFL Draft. His memorable game as a rookie came against the New Orleans Saints where he caught nine passes for 111 yards and a touchdown. He earned NFC Offensive Player of the Week. Godwin finished his rookie season with 34 receptions for 525 yards and a touchdown.

Godwin in his second season recorded 59 receptions for 842 yards and seven touchdowns. His third season with the Buccaneers was most successful to date. He started in 14 games recording 86 receptions for 1,333 yards and 9 touchdowns. He was selected for the 2020 Pro Bowl, the first of his career.

After Tom Brady announced to join Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Godwin gave up his jersey number 12 and switched to number 14. Godwin was happy to give up his number to Brady in the end, but initially, he wasn’t happy about it.

In a Twitter livestream with The Checkdown, Godwin said “I have been #No.12  since high school and it means a lot to me. At first, it bothered me a little bit, it was kind of getting at me because it is part of my identity, but when the GOAT comes calling, you kind of concede to him”.

Nevertheless, the 24-year-old wide receiver is hoping that he can get a few rings from Brady for giving his jersey number. “Like I said, hopefully, I can get a ring or two or three out of” he added. “I was more than happy to do it. I have a new persona for me, 1-4. We’re going to move forward and make something special with it”.
